Make an effective “Summary”, if not you might be turning off important people who are reading it. Writing a good resume Summary isn’t easy. From your career in the military, there are so many things that you can put into the Summary, but are they relevant? A good way to approach this question is to put yourself in the shoes of the company recruiter or hiring manager, and think about what you would like to see in a prospective candidate. When you finish your resume, sit back and look at the top third of the first page. Then ask yourself, “Would I like to interview me?” Maybe ask a friend to do the same thing, especially if they have already transitioned out of the military.

Different commitments in military leadership

Most people who served in the military had some level of leadership responsibility. Sometimes these came in the form of collateral duties or what you were told to do, even though it wasn’t really in your job title. Some of our most proud memories in the service came from those accomplishments. I’m sorry to say, but many of these additional roles or achievements might not be very relevant with respect to the job you are trying to pursue. With the Summary, you are really trying to give them a quick overview of your relevant experience and skills. So, keep it relevant!

Leadership by example in the “real” arena

One common mistake I see in military resumes from a single or second tour service member is that they tend to write too many Summary bullets relating to leadership when they are pursuing an Operator or Technician level position. In this case, try to craft just a few leadership-based bullets in a more “Lead Technician” role where you were “hands on” with the tools or operating the plant. Try not to position yourself right out of the job from the get-go. Other areas of importance include; explaining the technical experience in a way the hiring team will understand, spell out acronyms if you are going to use them again in the resume, and don’t make the Summary too long. Also, try not to write a bullet in the Summary, then repeat the same exact statement in your experience/employment section.

Conclusion

The Summary is a very useful part of your resume, especially when the hiring team might not have any prior military experience. A good Summary will give you an edge over the other people competing for the same open slot. Indeed.com has some good resources that you can use when writing a resume. Check out this link: (https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/resumes-cover-letters/6-universal-rules-for-resume-writing). If you are working with a good recruiter, they should be able to help you with tailoring your resume to better suit the type of position you are pursuing. This post is geared more for the individuals just getting out of the military, but does this make sense to you?

Great Career Opportunities for Transitioning Veterans

The data center career field offers many employment opportunities to prior-military technicians, engineers and leaders from various technical specialties, MOS or rating fields.  The key is to research the industry and try to find someone who can help you get prepared for the interview. When I talk with candidates who have never researched or considered interviewing for a data center job to look at a data center conceptually as a shore command with three main departments; (1) Security, (2) Operations (IT & Sales) and (3) Facilities Engineering. At Magellan we primarily focus on assisting data center companies in finding qualified “prior-military” candidates for the Facility Engineering side of their business. These positions range from entry level Facilities Technicians/Operators, Data Center Engineers, Specialty Engineering roles, Engineering Supervisors, Facility Managers and higher-level positions in their corporations.

The equipment supported in the Facilities Engineering department could include; back-up diesel generators, electrical distribution, power monitoring, UPS/batteries, specialized DC power equipment, chillers/HVAC, chill water distribution, ventilation, CRAC/CRAH units, fire suppression/detection, building monitoring systems, and other critical facility equipment.  Basically, the major facilities engineering systems that keep the servers running with reliable power and environmental controls (temperature and humidity). While the equipment seems to be heavy in the electrical field, mechanical and electronics specialties are highly desired as well. Most companies try to hire a well-rounded mix of talent in their data center teams.

As the labor pool of experienced and technically inclined professionals continues to thin out over time, data center companies are looking at non-traditional backgrounds to meet their staffing needs. While some companies have generally hired prior-military candidates in the past, many of them are still trying to fill their openings by only hiring people directly from the data center industry. Educating these hiring managers on the advantages of prior-military professionals can sometimes be difficult mainly due to the lack of specific industry experience. As quoted in the Data Center Explorer, another factor shaping data center work forces is the impending retirements of aging employees. As you can see in this article in Data Center Frontier, meeting data center staffing goals is becoming a challenge.

Learning more about how your military experience can help you prepare for an interview in the data center field could greatly assist you in landing that perfect job and career with an awesome company! The team at Magellan is ready to help you with your new career and has a wealth of experience working with candidates in Data Center and Critical Facilities recruiting and interview preparation.

MISSING MAN TABLE ~ As you entered the room, you may have noticed a special table; it is reserved to honor our missing men. Set for six, the empty chairs represent Americans who were or are missing from each of the services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard – and civilians, all with us in spirit.

Let me explain the meaning of this table, and then join me for a moment of silent prayer. The table is round – to show our everlasting concern. The cloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve. The single red rose reminds us of the lives of these Americans….and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, while seeking answers. The yellow ribbon symbolizes our continuing uncertainty, the hope for their return, and our determination to account for them. A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families – who long for answers after decades of uncertainty. The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return – alive or dead. The Bible represents the strength gained through faith, to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one Nation under God. The glass is inverted – symbolizing their inability to share a toast. The chairs are empty – they are missing…………….

Employers and companies can benefit from hiring Veterans. Military personnel are often cross-trained in multiple skills and have experience in varied tasks and responsibilities. Many Veterans have learned what it means to put in a hard day’s work. They have also come to appreciate the challenges and satisfaction of a job well done. Much of this experience can translate to their participation in the workforce making the Veteran an asset on the job.

Strengths the Veteran can bring to the workplace include:

  • Working well in a team. Teamwork is considered an essential part of daily life and is the foundation on which safe military operations are built.
  • Having a sense of duty. Responsibility for job performance and accountability for completing missions are something to take pride in.
  • Experiencing self-confidence. Holding a realistic estimation of self and ability based on experiences is expected of each Service Member.
  • Being organized and disciplined.
  • Possessing a strong work ethic. In the military, the mission always comes first.
  • Having the ability to follow through on assignments, even under difficult or stressful circumstances.
  • Possessing a variety of cross-functional skills, such as extensive training on computer programs and systems, interacting with various people with different skills to accomplish a task, and coordinating and troubleshooting problems in novel and known conditions.
  • Being able to problem solve quickly and creatively.
  • Being able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Being able to follow rules and schedules.

Hiring a Veteran can result in the hiring of a dedicated employee who has developed valuable teamwork, leadership, and job skills.
